What We Do
SmarterWrite exists for one purpose: to help teachers help their students write better.
Whether by enabling you to save and reuse your detailed explanations to address common mistakes, providing you with analytics to help you prioritize your most struggling students, or by simply by being that extra pair of eyes to spot the grammar minions, we're here for you. (It also doesn't hurt that students think editing on SmarterWrite is "fun" motivated because instant feedback invests them in being proactive about improving their writing.)
Here at SmarterWrite, we believe in the power of frequent and timely feedback. We're not here to replace teacher feedback; we only want to make it easier (and more enjoyable!) for teachers to comment on student writing. Because, afterall, it is through your insightful questions and suggestions that students learn the most!
Meet the Team
Jennifer Kim
Jenn graduated from U.C. Berkeley with her B.A. in English and Philosophy, intent on joining an elite bunch of ivory tower academics--only to realize that her love for education could be better fulfilled as a teacher. She joined Teach For America to make a tangible difference in students' lives and is now in her fifth year of teaching high school English. Frustrated with the lack of teacher-friendly tools to help improve instruction, she began collaborating with the rest of the SmarterWrite team in 2011 to create data tools to empower teachers everywhere. When she's not busy teaching, grading, planning, or working on SmarterWrite, she can be found scouring the sales rack at the local J.Crew, stretching on a ballet barre, or curling up with a good book.
David Chanin
David loves web programming and designing interfaces. Distraught at the dismal state of technology in education, David began working with the rest of the SmarterWrite team to create software tools to empower teachers. David graduated from Georgia Tech in 2009 and finished his masters at Stanford University in 2012, both in Electrical Engineering.
Kevin Lam
Kevin has over three years of consulting experience, specializing in business intelligence and data warehousing. Through volunteering with Los Angeles schools, he observed a disparity between the demand for data driven teaching and the availability of tools that enable timely, meaningful analysis of student performance metrics. He joined SmarterWrite hoping to bridge that gap by bringing together his consulting expertise and passion for transforming the educational system. Kevin has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley. In his spare time, he enjoys rock climbing, swimming, and hiking.
Aditya Khosla
Aditya is a PhD student at MIT, specializing in computer vision and machine learning. Seeing an opportunity to enhance education through intelligent data analysis, Aditya joined the SmarterWrite team to put his machine learning knowledge into practice. He is often found thinking about the questions 'What does this data imply?' and 'What more can we do with this data?'. Aditya has a M.S. in Computer Science, specializing in Artificial Intelligence, from Stanford University and a B.S. in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Economics from the California Institute of Technology.
